CPS is one of few shelters in
the state that offers these facilities. Sadly, cats with these viruses are often destroyed
and despite what many people think, cats with these conditions can live perfectly long,
happy and healthy lives. FIV is a lentivirus, meaning it progresses very slowly gradually
affecting a cat's immune system and passed only through fluid transfers and deep bite
wounds (however not transmitted via cat to human). FeLV is a retrovirus that also infects
only cats through deep bite and fluid transfers. These cats are adoptable to the right
family. They should be with other cats that have the same virus and must be indoor only to
prevent the virus from being spread to other cats. Our Feline Leukemia/FIV rooms are quiet
with plush beds and linens for the cats to relax and snooze on; these rooms also have
outside porch areas with cat trees to lounge in the sun, plenty of toys and a perfect view
to watch squirrels, lizards and birds outside. These cats also love attention and a belly
rub or head scratch!
